I don’t like to be critical of people on tumblr, but as a queer person, the comment about shipping is problematic to me. I keep seeing this reblogged so I feel like maybe I should comment on it now.
It just makes it sound like queer people and their relationships are like amusing toys to straight people in fandom. I had been thinking this for a while…I have no clue why people are still using the word “slash.” The character is gay, they are in a gay relationship. Slash sounds like some straight girls playing with gay characters like dolls. We’re real people. Gay men are real people. Gay people are not a fandom. So, please, if your kid turns out to be gay, don’t treat them like they are a character you’re shipping. Please read about real queer experiences, ones outside the happy, homophobia-free fandoms where no one is getting fired from their job because of their sexuality (and it’s totally legal in a lot of states), or there’s no legacy of AIDS, all the not-cutesy, not Feels-inspiring stuff is glossed over. And also the great things about queer culture are not there. Maybe that’s okay in fandom, but that’s not the reality. Don’t ship your kids, but more importantly don’t treat their sexuality like it’s cute. It does not feel good and it’s not great ally-ship.
